Virtualization

This is the process that allows you to host virtual machines / servers on other machines and or servers. This minimises cost of ownership of both hardware and software and allows maximum management and easy restoration in the event of disaster recovery.

Main Reasons for Virtualization

Server Consolidation

The technology offers the ability to streamline the number of mainly servers that organizations have. In this instance you have a server hosting a number of servers, depending on hardware.

Disaster Recovery

Because virtual machines are a like a file on the physical server, you can back them up to different locations. This archives two very important IT aspects:

· Disaster Recovery, and

· Backups

Because of the architectural design of this platform you can have backups of the virtual server on a daily basis if you wanted, and in the event of a disaster you can restore the server immediately from backups.

Testing and Training

As virtual machines are hosted on other machines, it creates the best environment for any training and testing as you can just delete the machine after use.

Virtualization also gives the opportunity of running different operating systems and applications on a single host machine.
